Linux is a “free and open-source” family of computer operating systems actually built on the Linux kernel. It’s most widely used in server situations and is becoming more popular on the desktop. As changes have been taking place in the “Windows World”, many former users of that operating system, have migrated over to Linux. Some members of the family are typically packaged as a distribution (a.k.a. distro). One such “distro” is called Linux Mint, and many of our group members use it.
Linux has been around since the mid-1990s and has since reached a user-base that spans the globe. Linux is actually everywhere: It’s in your phones, your thermostats, in your cars, refrigerators, Roku devices, and televisions. It also runs most of the Internet, all of the world’s top 500 supercomputers, and the world’s stock exchanges. Linux gives users full control over their environment, making it a preferred choice for those that want complete control over their computers.
The Linux SIG/Help Desk covers anything that has to do with the free Linux-based operating systems and the different distros, desktop environments, and software packages that are available. The group is primarily a Debian/Ubuntu/LinuxMint based group, but other versions of Linux are discussed.

We are now meeting “in-person” only on the 2nd Fridays of the month, for individual help with learning/running Linux. Bring in your laptop or computer, or use one of our laptops, and get answers to your questions on what to do or how to do it. We also welcome anyone that’s interested in learning about the Linux to join us on these days.
Our monthly meeting that takes place on the 4th Fridays is on-line only, using Proton Meet. Through the contributions of those attending this meeting, we hope to provide help, solve problems, and share information about the Linux operating system. Not only do we have local Linux users attend this on-line meetings,but we also have a number of Linux users that join us from all over the United States and Canada.
